Grey Pro is the latest plug-in to be developed using Acustica Audio’s Hyper 3 technology, and promises to accurately emulate the sound of three different American-made hardware VCA compressors.
The release is available as a suite that contains two different plug-in versions: Grey Pro, and Grey Pro Ultra. Both provide the same sound and set of parameters, but the latter also comes equipped with a metering system that provides a real-time waveform display and knee display courtesy of Acustica’s newly developed Aria engine. Three different VCA compressor emulations are included, each based on hardware units made by dbx, offering a range of different sound characters within a single plug-in instance.
The first mode, V65, is described as a vintage hard-knee design that offers an authentic 1970s sound with dbx’s OverEasy compression curve, whilst the second, 566, features a modelled 12AU7 double-triode valve stage that promises to add some warmth and body to incoming signals. The third option, 160SL, then offers a cleaner-sounding alternative with ultra-low distortion figures thanks to the high-performance VCA module used in the original unit. In addition to the high-quality emulation offered by their Hyper 3 technology, Acustica say that they have also incorporated a new Anti-Aliasing algorithm that significantly reduces aliasing issues within the plug-in.
Compatibility
Grey Pro is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or 11, and Macs running macOS 10.15 and higher. VST, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.

Grey Pro is available now, and is being offered at an introductory price of €69 until 13 March 2024, after which it will cost €139.
